Abstract (up to 200 words):
Do faculty members value online teaching? What is their sense of the value placed on online teaching by their students, their colleagues, and university administrators? In an effort to elicit attitudes on these topics, an online survey commissioned by the Academic Affairs Division of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington was administered to UNCW faculty members in February, 2003. The primary focus of the survey concerned perceptions among UNCW faculty about the value of online teaching in the context of teaching in general, the effort to learn to use instructional software and media, and the time and effort involved in teaching online. Additional questions were included to tap faculty members’ level of technological preparedness and/or willingness to incorporate the multimedia skills that they have mastered into their teaching efforts. UNCW’s Teaching Center Director and Technology College Director examine key results of this survey and invite attendees to join them in exploring ways in which such surveys might be used to plan professional development programs and incentives.
